Thoughts
Thanksgiving
Farewell, dirty, smoggy, old Trono
for a few days.
Flat fields, green pastures, tattered gardens,
glowing Marigolds and 'Mums,
then hills - Oak Ridges, Albion,
the Escarpment, so blue in the west.
What views as I reach the top!
Paved country roads with bands
of shadow and light
from patchy clouds and sunshine.
Sunday morning, little traffic,
driving slowly to enjoy the scenery.
And what scenery!
Can anything surpass Southern Ontario
in October?
Tropical flowers?. ...I wonder
Ontario beauty is so ephemeral.
Late for gaudy, brash brilliance,
showing-off-ness
of self-confident youth.
Now fading soft, gentle, mellow old age.
Great panoramas of woodlots for miles,
single individual trees
with delicate, intricate tracery
of denuded small branches,
a few gaunt old elm skeletons.
Ohl Orangeville cemetery
and that small, dead tree
with twisted, distorted writhing limbs.
Some roadside trees with green hearts
and yellow outer leaves like a hooded cape,
almost black evergreens complementing the brightness,
a few beeches with characteristic shape,
bronze oaks,
white trunks of paper birch,
a sudden, scarlet splash of sumac.
Elation Exhilaration. Exultation
