the ram -pump itself and an outlet.
The ram -pump incorporates two
main valves. The primary valve, once
started, will continuously close and
open automatically.
When the valve is open, a high
volume of water can flow out without
restriction; when the flow reaches a
definite velocity, the primary valve
suddenly closes itself: The momen-
tum of water is immediately stopped
and a pressure pulse is created in the
ram. This high pressure pulse can
now escape through the secondary
valve. A small amount of this high
pressure water enters the high
pressure vessel and the remaining
water escapes through the primary
valve which has now re -opened. The
supply to the use point is delivered
from the vessel. The system repeats
continuously about once every se-
cond.
Although most of the water escapes
through the primary valve, hydraulic
efficiencies of up to 90 per cent can be
achieved. The efficiency of the system
will vary with the flows and pressures
involved in any site conditions. With
this in mind, the manufacturer sup-
plies an optimum design for each ap-
plication. Various sizes of ram -
pumps are available to produce up to
20 times the driving pressure head (a
five foot dam and head in a river will
produce a 100 foot delivery head). A
delivery flow of 25 I gpm (110 1/min)
is common. Maximum pumping head
is 1000 feet (300 metres). High
volume deliveries can be achieved by
arranging several ram -pumps in a
parallel configuration. With no exter-
nal energy source requirements, the
cost of running the pumping system is
negligible.
