Whelan reviews
record-keeping
computer system
Agriculture Minister Eugene
Whelan met with representatives of
Canadian National Live Stock
Records (C.N.L.S.R.) to review pro-
gress on the acquisition of a new
record-keeping computer system.
Agriculture Canada is contributing
a total of $230,000 for the purchase
of software, data conversion and site
preparation to computerize the
C.N.L.S.R. Recording System.
C.N.L.S.R. was established in 1905
for the purpose of nationalizing the
record keeping of breed associations.
Presently, 42 associations belong to
this non-profit organization.
The costs of maintaining a largely
manual record-keeping service have
escalated rapidly in recent years. A
study conducted by Agriculture
Canada showed the need to com-
puterize in order to provide improved
as well as additional services to
breeders at a reasonable cost.
In addition, the new service will
make it technically possible to link

Signs Memoranda
of Understanding
Agriculture Minister Eugene
Whelan traveled to Yugoslavia and
Czechoslovakia to sign Memoranda
of Understanding (MOV) for increas-
ed scientific co-operation in the field
of agriculture between Canada and
the two Eastern European countries.
He also visited Rome and the East
African country of Ethiopia as Presi-
dent of the World Food Council.
Canada produces many of the same
food products as Yugoslavia and
Czechoslovakia, particularly
livestock, horticulture and grains.
The MOU with Yugoslavia covered
such areas as the exchange of fruit
and corn breeding material and infor-
mation about insect pest control.
The MOU with Czechoslovakia
specifically covered veterinary ac-
tivities.
Whelan toured agricultural
facilities in the two countries and in
rom, met with the staff of the World
Food Council. He was elected to the
presidency of the Council in June of
this year. E
BRIGHT IDEAS
Tie one end of an approximate 10
foot piece of rope to the centre of the
bottom rung of the ladder when it is
lying down. Have the other end in
such a position that you can stand on
it when starting to raise the ladder.
Walk in on the rope as the ladder is
raised and the ladder will not slip. ❑
