Ag. Sales
in Saudi Arabia
An Ontario exhibit at Saudi
Agriculture '83 in Riyadh, Saud;
Arabia expected to generate $2.2
million in sales of Ontario livestock
and livestock breeding technology.
Four Ontario companies displayed
dairy cattle, poultry breeding stock
and livestock breeding technology

Delegates to the mission were Dr.
Otto Weninger, Shaver Poultry
Breeding Farms Ltd., Cambridge;
Hank Morsink, Semex Canada,

Bill Edelstein, Hay Farms Interna-
tional Ltd., Oakville. Accompanying
the mission for the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food was Charlie
!Milne, export development officer.
The displays of livestock breeding
technology composed part of the On-
tario exhibit which also included farm
equipment. grain storage and handl-
ing equipment, greenhouses and
agricultural engineering consulting
services.
This mission to Saudi Arabia was
one of several such sales missions
sponsored by the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food to develop new
markets for Ontario agricultural pro-
ducts.
Private Plots
in Bulgaria
In an effort to overcome shortages
of food products, Bulgarian
agricultural planners are granting
more and more private plots to farm-
ing. In 1982, private agriculture pro-
vided one-third of national meat pro-
duction and almost one-third of eggs.
Last year, the extent of private plots
reached 100,000 hectares (almost a
quarter of a million acres); the
number and size of private plots is
not known, however. In 1980, private
farmers produced 81 million litres of
milk and 30,000 tons of horticultural
products. The Bulgarian news agency
states that private farming "is an ef-
fective means of ensuring throughout
the year regular supplies of
agricultural products to the popula-
tion."E
