The Rural Voice, 1983-10, Page 9shrinking drought may result in
surpluses. The Agriculture Depart-
ment has hinted that it doesn't intend
to have corn farmers reduce plantings
next year through an extension of the
payment -in-kind program, because
the drought is cutting into stockpiles
of surplus commodities. "Payment -
in -kind," says Deputy Agriculture
Secretary Richard Lyng, "implies
you have something to make the
payments with."
As of August 1, U.S.D.A. had
estimated Illinois' corn yield at 102
bus. and soys at 34 bus. On August
24, Ag. extension personnel and agri-
business people from across the state
have estimated '83 corn yields at 82
bus. for corn and 29 bu. for soys.
This compares to 134 bu. for corn
and 39 bu. for soys in 1982. ❑
