The Rural Voice, 1983-09, Page 63United Kingdom's involvement in the
European Economic Community has
meant a bigger market for produce
and a large population for consump-
tion. Because of this, there are no
quotas on milk production or any
farm commodities and farmers can
produce as much or as little as they
wish.
No mace (corn) is grown in the
U.K. because of the cool climate and
grass silage from Italian rye grass and
timothy predominates to suit the
large, constant rainfall.
Silage competitions, farm manage-
ment tours, stock judging and
homemakers competitions are just
several of the many events that the
Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster are
involved in. The Young Farmers
Clubs are a combination of our 4H
and Junior Farmer programs. A
popular YFC event in northern
Ireland is the hoof and hook competi-
tion. A suckling calf is weighed in Oc-
tober by a participating club member
who feeds the calf through the winter,
following set rules and guidelines and
recording payment costs. In May, all
the calves are taken to a meat plant
where they are weighed and judged
on the hoof and likewise when they
are slaughtered. The live weight gain,
etc. is taken into consideration to
determine the winner.
Hamilton has visited many farming
operations while in Ontario ranging
from dairy to tobacco to a bee farm
and he felt that our dairy and beef
operations were efficiently run. The
U.K. Exchange has given him the op-
portunity to experience agricultural
practices first hand and make a lot of
new friends. I've had "great
hospitality" he said and added in
conclusion "I hope Junior Farmers
will apply for the U.K. Jr. Farmer
Exchange to see how people live in
the U.K. compared to here."
Corn and Soybean markets
