4-H DAIRY SHOW & FITTING DAY
Grey County 4H members were given an insight on how to fit and trim
calves for upcoming shows at a 4H Dairy Show and Fitting Day held recently
at Walton Sale Arena near Durham. Thirty-two 4H'rs were given instruc-
tion on clipping and washing of heifer calves as well as a rope tying demonstra-
tion.
A cross section of junior, intermediate and senior members then divided in-
to groups and practiced clipping techniques, followed by a showmanship com-
petition. Each member halter - led the heifer calves outside as part of the
showmanship competition which was competitive but with no class prizes

4-H Silver Dollar Competition coming up
A picked group of more than nine-
ty senior level 4H calf club members
will represent their counties in the an-
nual 4H Silver Dollar Competition in
late August.
United Breeders of Guelph and
Erin Jr. Farmers will be sponsoring
the show, which is unique because it
emphasizes the competitor more than
the calf. Each 4Her writes an essay
and answers a senior level quiz, then
receives points in the showring for
showmanship and finally for the calf.
There are two competitions, with
the beef calves going into the ring at
10 a.m., the dairy calves at 1 p.m.
Each division winner (quiz, essay,
showmanship, calf) will receive a
mint proof silver dollar and and ten
nickel silver dollars. The champion
competitor with the highest total
points gets a mint coin set and 50
nickel silver dollars on a silver tray.
The runner up and honorable men-
tion win mint sets and 35 and 25
nickel silver dollars respectively, also
on silver trays.
In its early years the Silver Dollar
Competition was limited to dairy
calf club members, and it has become
the ultimate challenge available to
them. Because of the popularity of
the competition it has been necessary
to limit the number of entrants per
county to five, allow them only two
years' participation. The result is a
show where the best from each coun-
ty have the opportunity to meet and
compete with others at the same in-
terests and competence.
The 4H Beef Silver Dollar Com-
petition is in its sixth year, the result
of demands for a senior level show
based on a beef heifer calf project.
All other top level beef shows are bas-
ed on a steer calf project which ends
when the steer goes to market.
The heifer calf has the advantage that
the 4H'er can keep her to form the
nucleus of this future herd.
A unique feature of the beef show
will be the number of breeds of calves
represented. There will be as many as
eight breeds represented in the ring at
one time. Both shows will be held in
the main show barn at Erin on
August 27.
