Must be member
to qualify
Federal Minister of Agriculture
Eugene Whelan, gave final approval
that will give 1983 corn crops eligibili-
ty for advance payment.
The plan will allow growers to store
their grain corn up to nine months in
hopes of receiving a higher price.
Before, many growers were forced to
sell their crop as soon as it was
harvested. The price off the field and
nine months later increased
sometimes as much as $20 per ton.
The program is a feather in the cap
of the newly formed Ontario Corn
Producers Association. A corn
grower must be a member to qualify
for the advance payment plan.
The Association has set September
1 as the deadline for membership in
the $10 million program. Farmers
may join anytime but it will be on a
first come, first serve basis says
Werner Ritgen a director from
Ashfield Township.

Deadlines for applications and all
maximum allocations are set by
Agriculture Canada and follow set•
procedures as laid out for other com-
modity groups like the tobacco
growers and the bean growers.
The plan has a set maximum rate of
coverage of $15,000 per farmer,
$30,000 per partnership or $45,000
where three or more members or
shareholders of a partnership are ac-
tively in the operation. In simple
terms, to be eligible for a $15,000 ad-
vance payment a farmer must have
$30,000 worth of corn in storage.
To guard against default and
fraud, and since the association has
no funds, application must be accom-
panied by a certified check equivalent
to 10 per cent of the amount of the
