The plan will allow growers to store their grain corn up to nine months in hopes of receiving a higher price. Before, many growers were forced to sell their crop as soon as it was harvested. The price off the field and nine months later increased sometimes as much as $20 per ton. The program is a feather in the cap of the newly formed Ontario Corn Producers Association. A corn grower must be a member to qualify for the advance payment plan. The Association has set September 1 as the deadline for membership in the $10 million program. Farmers may join anytime but it will be on a first come, first serve basis says Werner Ritgen a director from Ashfield Township. The plan has a set maximum rate of coverage of $15,000 per farmer, $30,000 per partnership or $45,000 where three or more members or shareholders of a partnership are ac- tively in the operation. In simple terms, to be eligible for a $15,000 ad- vance payment a farmer must have $30,000 worth of corn in storage.
