The Rural Voice, 1983-09, Page 27Beans mean business
For farmers who took the chance
this year and stayed in the bean
business there may be some decent
prices.
According to Charlie Broadwell,
general manager of the Ontario Bean
Producers Marketing Board, bean
production in both Ontario and the
U.S. has dropped on the average, 45
per cent due to the low prices of last
year and this in turn will drive prices
up this year.
Since he has returned from a trade
mission from Japan, Malaysia,
Australia and New Zealand,
Broadwell is concerned that Ontario
farmers have cut back too much.
Speaking to farmers at the Seaforth
Legion recently, Boardwell reported
that the potential for selling Ontario
beans is good.
Broadwell says the board will close
the pool August 15, audit the year
and then make representation for
stabilization for the year's crop.

Rhizobia development on soybeans
Intl
These soybean roots taken from a field grown by John Underwood near
Bluevale show what rhizobia development on soybeans should look like to
give maximum fixation of nitrogen. Underwood applied a granular in-
oculant (at a rate of 9 kilograms/hectare) and a peat -type inoculant (at a
two time rate) at time of planting.
