Rod row test plots of oats and
barley varieties on the farm owned by
Peter Van Sickle, south of Ripley,
were first on the agenda at the crop
twilight meeting sponsored by the
Bruce County Soil and Crop Im-
provement Association.
The barley plots, in excellent shape
this year, include new varieties Birka
and Rodeo; best standing was Perth.
The barley to watch, according to
Rick Upfold, Bruce county crop
specialist, is Leger, a six -rowed
smooth awned feed type barley
developed by the Ottawa Research
Station. It has been one of the highest
yielding varieties across Ontario in
the last two years.
Oat varieties include Donald and
OAC Woodstock 0A421-7 showing
promise with OGLE 1983, New York
State, with a good bushel weight.
