Use large tractor
to pull small loads
You'll probably find some of your field
work forces you to use a 100 + -hp tractor
to handle a job that normally could be
done with a 40 -hp unit. Question: Is it a
waste of fuel and tractor to use the bigger
unit?
Not necessarily so, when you think
about it. Often, it's a good idea. Say, for
example, you have an implement that
needs 40 hp to operate it. You have a
choice of using either a 60- or 100 -hp
tractor.
Fuel consumption for the 60 -hp unit
will be about 4.6 gallons an hour. The
100 -hp tractor will use about 7.5 gallons
of fuel an hour. But the larger tractor
operating at only half power will pull the
same as the smaller tractor and, at this
power rating, will use only 3.8 gallons of
fuel an 1`our. Result: a saving of
three-quarters of a gallon an hour.
Therefore, by using the bigger tractor
more hours, you'll also be lowering your
fixed costs.
One caution: Don't reduce the engine
speed to the point it's under strain. This
overloading can increase repair costs and
offset the gains from reduced engine
speeds. i -

Great way
to get jobs done
If you wonder what an Agricrew can do
for you, the question is easily answered.
The program is aimed at helping farmers
to get jobs done that they couldn't get
done themselves or something they
cannot find time to do over a busy
summer season.
These crews are able to paint, bale
hay, pick stones or any other general
work on the farm. The crews consist of
one foreperson and three crewmembers
with each of them having some farm
experience. The crews are avilable to
farmers and agricultural societies from
June 27th to August 19th, for a fee of
$90/8 hour working day.
For answers to any questions you may
have about Agricrew or if you are
interested in hiring a crew, contact the
Agricrew Co-ordinator at your county
OMAF office.
