The biggest benefit is that it yields one and a half times the yield of spring canola. To increase yields, Weller has several hives of bees at one end of the field to aid in pollination. Not necessary, say some, but Weller is keen on improving his crop. Donald Forster, R.R. 1, Ripley, is growing Topas for the first time. Topas is a variety from Sweden tested at the University of Guelph. It is unlicensed in Canada, meaning that it is not registered here. Six metric tonnes were brought into the country under special license. It is mandatory his crop go for crushing. It cannot be used for seed. Forster incorporated insecticide at planting - five pounds of seed, five pounds of insecticide. His fertilizer costs were equal to corn. He says he sees a little wild mustard in one of his fields. Canola is still relatively new but Bruce county farmers are interested in any new crop, says Mac Bolton. "Especially if there's money in it." Cost of production may be half to two-thirds that of corn. Yields are higher in the shorter season areas of southern Ontario than in the main soybean growing area, therefore it's not in competition with soyas. Bolton says, "Any increase in yield or price will make canola a winner." Cash in canola? Therd just could be. For further information: Canola, Canada's Rapeseed Crop. Pub- lication 56.
