test when Doreen spent a fascinating
year on the International Agricultural
Exchange Association program on dairy
farms in Australia and Denmark.
Bruce Morris also appreciated the
residence experience.
"I thought two years would be a good
experience to get away from home for
awhile because to just come right out of
high school and just settle right down
and be here, didn't exactly appeal to me. I
though that when I had the chance, I was
going to take it."
Julie agrees that off -campus students
at CCAT just don't get involved in the
school's social activities to the same
degree, missing a good deal of fun.
When discussing the agricultural
business management course itself, both
Doreen and Bruce agreed they found the
project farm program in their second year
,particularly valuable.
Teams of five or six students are
assigned to an area farm, which they visit
weekly, working closely with the farmer
and his financial records to prepare a
detailed analysis of the operation.
"You never have another chance to
look over a farm as closely as that,"
Bruce notes. "It's really good to see how
the real world works after you've been
sitting there reading a book for two
years."
Or as Doreen found, seeing how
someone else farms "really opens your
eyes, you see how well you do or don't
have it at home."
Now both graduates have had a chance
to experience the program from the other
side of the fence. The Morris operation
was a project farm this year, and the
Vinks have been used as a project farm
twice.
Julie Morris, echoing her husband's
conclusion, found the most valuable
period of her course was the practical,
