The Rural Voice, 1983-06, Page 44pigs should go to market 12-16 days
later, take 20 pounds less feed and grade
1-2 index points better. On-farm situa-
tions show very similar figures with the
exception of feed conversion. It is
generally assumed that 35 to 50 Ib. extra
feed is required to put a pig to market
with floor feeding as compared to
self -feeders. This work has been verified
with research from Ridgetown College
(Table 2).
For complete evaluation of self -feeders
versus floor feeding, it becomes essen-
tial to consider an individual's complete
system. Self -feeders permit pigs to grow
faster and more uniformly but with more
backfat. Feed wastage from floor feeding
more than likely offsets any improve-
ments in backfat derived from floor
feeding. The net result will be greater
throughput of pigs per barn using
self -feeders, therefore, a lower overhead
cost per pig. With today's figures, there
is about $5 more money per pig for feeder
fed pigs (Table 2). In addition, one has to
note the disadvantages of self -feeders
with regard to dirty pens, durability and
possibility of high moisture feeds caking
or molding. At the same time, self -feed-
ers can assist labour efficiency because
they do not require the promptness and
expertise of limit feeding. Self -feeders
are especially effective in automated
harns utilizing pigs of excellent genetic
quality. Unfortunately, there are no
self -feeders developed for feeding high
moisture corn. Producers are using
standard self -feeders currently available
on the market place and feeding 22-25%
moisture feed through these feeders.
Even then, it may become necessary for
the feeders to occasionally run empty to
prevent caking or molding. The challenge
still remains in developing an automated
feeding system for high moisture feeds
so as to reduce feed wastage..1
