first prize in the 9-15 age group. She also received a prize
in the poetry section.
Could have filled this issue with the stories, poems and
artwork received in response to the sixth annual Rural
Voice Kids' Competition. Armloads of material came in
the mail. Some of it would make you smile, when the
children wrote about the never ending work on the farm,
the chores they had to do, the good times they spent with
their animals, or when they wrote about "falling face first
into the manure pile" [this seemed to be a real fear,
several entries described this event in detail!]
Some of the stories left me with a lump in my throat ---
one writer wrote a story about losing the farm, another
wrote about a barn fire, based on a true experience which
will be very real, especially if you've experienced it
yourself.
Wish we could have picked more winners. We're
planning on publishing more of the entries in the next few
months. Our thanks to the many children who participated
and the schools that sent big packages of entries to us
Animals take precedence in this issue. Are farm animals
being abused or are they getting the best care possible?
There is growing public awareness of this issue which
could create problems in the future.
The 10th annual Ontario Pork Congress will be held
June 21, 22 and 23 in Stratford and The Rural Voice has
prepared a special supplement for this event including
some up-to-date information on the swine industry.
We've started another feature this month --- places to go
and things to do on your day off [remember when?]. Writer
Sheila Richards headed into the Durham area and found
some interesting spots to visit. In future issues we plan to
tell you about other places you can visit close to home.
Mouthwatering recipes for strawberries and rhubarb are
listed in Rural Living; these were provided by Shirley
Hazlitt, a strawberry grower in Colborne township who
lent us several cookbooks just on berries. A real treat is in
store for you._
