The Rural Voice, 1983-05, Page 60Grey County Federation of Agriculture Newsletter FEDERATION HIGHLIGHTS The Annual Meeting is October 15 at the Shallow Lake Community Centre. Jack Vails Orchestra will play for dancing. The Grey County representatives on the Farm Financial Advisory Service are Ray Robertson, 986-2623, Don Hill, 371-1019, Carl Spencer, 376-1926 or Bessie Saunders 538-1338. The OFA co-ordinator is Leslie Valentine. PUBLIC SPEAKING The winners in the Public Speaking Finals were Sandra Clark Grade 6, McPhail Memorial Flesherton, speaking on Misty the Duck. Second place winner was Paul Noble of Keppel Sarawak, with his topic. "The Circus" and third place winner was Becky Twinlan Grade 8, Meaford Community School. Her topic was "The Mennonites". The winner of the semi-finals in North West Grey, Scott Russell of Hepworth gave his speech, "Adoption" at Holland Township Federation of Agriculture's Annual Meeting. Also speaking was Ray Robertson, chairman of the Property and Taxation Committee of Grey Federation, outlining Grey's proposals to the Pro- perty Taxation of Farms and Managed Forests. MET WITH TIMBRELL MPP Bob McKessock arranged a meeting for the Property and Taxation Committee,with Hon. Dennis Timbrell on March 22 Attending from Grey were Ray Robertson chairman of the committee. Grant Preston, Don Hill and Bessie Saunders. We were well received by the Minister and his aides. They asked for more information which Ray Robertson is preparing. Ray also presented Grey's proposals to Grey County Council when we presented our brief on March 29. Grey County Council passed a resolution supporting Grey Federation's proposals. Many farmers are concerned about their property rights if 100% of farm tax is rebated. Hon. Dennis Timbrell stated that a press release is forthcoming re property rights. One copy of Bill C653 - (the act to amend the Farmers Creditors Arrange- ment Act) was obtained and Mary Harvie will make copies for the directors and it will be discussed at the next meeting. Dinner, sponsored by the Grey Federation of Agriculture. Federation committees and Grey county commodity groups and farm organizations presented briefs to their Members of Parliament on a variety of concerns. Photo, from left, M.P. Gunby] SUMMER MEETINGS The summer meetings will be held in the evening at 8 p.m. Dates are April 27, May 25, June 22, July 27, August 24, and Sept. 28. All meetings are in the OMAF Board Room, Markdale. ARTEMESIA MEETING Artemesia Federation had Barry Tolton OMAF Agricultural Representative as guest speaker at their meeting. He des- cribed a new $25 million, five year Grant Program for Manure Storage and Erosion Control Programs, to be administered by OMAF. President Clay Schwegler discussed the current activities of township, county and provincial federations, particularly their efforts in having the proposed farm tax rebates revised. BRIEFS PRESENTED Bud Hill - 2nd vice president, read the briefs presented to Grey County Council and the Hon. Dennis Timbrell. Clay Schwegler closed the meeting with a discussion on "Tingle Voltage" on the farm and ways to reduce this problem. Artemesia's next meeting is April 28 at 8:30 p.m. at OMAF Board Room, Markdale. Ray Robertson, representing the Farm Labour Pool said there were many students anxious for summer jobs. Contact the Farm Labour Pool nearest you. Don Hill, reporting on the Rural Seminar for Vital People in Chesley, thought the women's Institute was alive and flourishing, as the women were in the majority, and many of them were representing Institutes. The Seminar was an educational and worthwhile venture. Clay Schwegler and Bessie Saunders will attend the Public Relations Seminar in Toronto on April 18.
