PLASTIC HELPS FARMER IN FIGHT AGAINST CROP DAMAGE Vansco Plastics Inc., has introduced a complete line of reinforced plastics for the farmer. Vansco poly -fabrics are constructed of woven or cross -laminated polyethylenes. Used as protective cov- erings, these high strength materials offer outstanding features to aid in the fight against crop damage and the fight to save money. The reinforced materials are formu- lated to withstand extreme weather conditions, are rot resistant and water- proof and treated to hold up to tempera- tures of -40°C. They are light -weight and easy to handle. Vansco Plastics have a number of applications around the farm including protective covers for hay, grain, silage, equipment and animal pens. Vansco WHAT'S NEW? #1455 Hay Covers are made with rope reinforced hems and have reinforced eyelets every 3' around the perimeter. The covers will last many seasons with proper handling, yet they cost approxi- mately 4¢/bale on only two years usage. For grain storage, Vansco can make covers for both bulk stockpiles or smaller bins. The covers can be fabricated to your exact requirements. With regard to bunker silage covers, it is known that these have always presented a special problem to the Canadian farmer. In a number of cases, plain polyethyelene has been used with limited results. Vansco has two fabrics that are reasonably priced yet will perform as expected. Vansco #10533 and SS -3 or 4 are available in standard 40' x 100' rolls or can be fabricated into large covers to ease in installation. Lastly, Vansco also supplies truck covers, seed -drill and discer, auger motor and other various machinery covers. Also, wind screens are available for animals pens that require protection from the cold. All Vansco products are guaranteed and free samples and information are available by calling 416-221-8116 (Col- lect) or by writing to Vansco Plastics Inc., P.O. Box 490, Don Mills, Ont. M3C 2T2. NEW E. COLI SCOURS BACTERIN Salsbury Laboratories announces a new kind of biologic to prevent E. coli (enteric colibacillosis) scours in baby pigs. The new product, EcoBacTM is the first federally -licensed sub -unit bacterin for swine. EcoBacTM is used to vacci- nate the sow to pass maternal antibodies to her offspring. As a sub -unit bacterin, EcoBac con- tains only the parts of the E. coli organism that stimulate immunity. This offers several advantages over whole cell vaccines. EcoBac dosage is low -- 2 ml (cc) -- and the level of endotoxic material is consistently low from lot to lot. The three scours -causing strains of E. coli contain hair-like projections called pili. The bacteria use these pili to adhere to the pigs small intestine and multiply, causing rapid dehydration associated with scours. These pili are the sub -units used to manufacture Salsbury EcoBac. The three strains of E. coli whose pili are contained in EcoBac are K88. K99 and 987-P. After E. coli cells are replicated, Salsbury, in a process developed with the aid of university researchers, "shears" the pili from the E. coli. The pili are collected and concentrated to make EcoBac. Because only he pili sub -units are used, dosage is lower than whole cell vaccines for E. coli scours. The precise level of K88, K99 and 987-P antigens needed for immunity remains constant from lot to lot. This means the level of endotoxin also remains consistently low. As a result. sows vaccinated with EcoBac show minimal reactions. In Salsbury research studies, from vaccinated and non -vaccinated sows were severely challenged with enter- opathogenic E. coli. Sixty-one percent of the pigs from non -vaccinated sows died from scours compared with 5 percent of the pigs from vaccinated sows. The average weight gain of surviving pigs was 1.45 pounds at five days of age for pigs from vaccinated sows versus .96 pounds of gain for pigs from non -vaccinated sows. Salsbury EcoBac is administered at four and two weeks prior to farrowing in a 2 ml dose. ot4OWAY FARMS • YORKSHIRES • LANDRACE • DUROC %jrfl%yse Fear rind ,So Arts PERFORMANCE TESTED Quality Swine, performance tested, health ap- proved gilts and boars from a herd with very good mothering ability.
