Land drainage and
the farm economy
Is the crop worth the
cost?
Increasing profit by improving
productivity is the primary
goal of drainage. Immediate
benefits are followed by
equally important long term
advantages.
A recent study by Prof. Ross
Irwin, University of Guelph,
concludes that, at current
land prices, farmers must
either produce more or grow
crops that will provide greater
returns. Often this is only
possible by improving the
drainage of the farm.
Irwin also points out that,
discounting inflation, the
price of land has risen 264%
in the past 20 years. The cost
of drainage has risen only
34%! To improve productivity,
farmers should tile all the land
that needs it before
purchasing additional land.
There it is. Drainage is a safe,
sound and sensible
investment—any time.
