GROWTH IN RURAL AREAS
Rural Canada is growing faster than
this country's urban areas. according to
the latest census. And it appears to be
more than just a flash -in -the -pan.
The 1981 census indicates Canada's
rural population grew by 8.9 per cent
since 1976. whereas the urban growth
rate was only five per cent for the same
five years. The urban growth rate
outpaced rural growth only in the three
Prairie provinces.
The rural growth population trend
was first noticed in the 1976 census.
"The 1970's was the first decade in
Canada's history to record a faster
growth rate for rural areas than for
urban areas." says Statistics Canada.
The federal agency defines a rural area
as a community with fewer than 1,000
people. or an area with a population
density of less than 400 people per
square kilometre.
