Lawrence Andres, a young pro-
gressive farmer at R.R.1, Tiverton, in
Kincardine township maintains a
herd of 50-55 mature cows with a 160
composite BCA. He and his brother
Philip operate a partnership, growing
most of their feed requirements for
their livestock without the aid of arti-
ficial fertilizers or agricultural chemi-
cals. The only additional feed is
about 30-40 tonnes of corn that he
gets from another organic farmer
each fall.
The result of good soil manage-
ment is an excellent soil tilth. "A
healthy soil will have up to 2.5
tonnes of earthworms per hectare
while a poor soil will have less than
1/2 a tonne.
Along with the dairy operation, the
Andres brothers maintain a small
herd of handsome Arabian horses.
