per cent for the first five years and 12
per cent for the next five, on amounts
up to $350,000. M.P.P. Jack Riddell
said the Saskatchewan program only
applied to new land acquisitions.
Riddell, though sympathetic to begin-
ning farmers, questioned the timing of
a young farmer program at this time of
low prices and over -production.
Doug Trewartha, Huron Milk Commit-
tee president said they didn't need any
new dairy men for the next five years.
"That's not very palatable to young
hopefuls but that's the facts," he said.
OFA director Merle Gunby felt there
was still room for young farmers to take
over existing operations.
Gordon Hill. chairman of the Proper-
ties and Land Use Committee said
Huron county had 17 per cent of the
prime agricultural land in southwestern
Ontario. Hill was questioned on the
new tax proposal and the 100 per cent
rebate on farm land. He said this was
not in the jurisdiction of his committee
but he was willing to speak on the
topic. He said OFA had worked long
and hard on the proposal, trying to
make the system more equitable to
farmers. The present 50 per cent rebate,
he said, is not supported by legislation
and could be rescinded each year.
