became Miss Universe, she said "I knew
I would be Miss Universe, even if the
judge didn't know it." How many of you
semen all over the world. Dr. Mike
Wilson and Dr. Soren Rosenthall, world
renowned researchers are right here in
Guelph. How much do we use this
"If you want to set yourself a goal, you should identity ten
people who are going to help you accomplish this goal. I'll bet
when you identify those ten people, you'll find you have set your
goals way too low"
have that same belief: "I know I can do
it if I want to do it."
There are hundreds of examples of
this. The basic reason Dr. Barney
Clarke was selected to receive the
artificial heart was because he had a
powerful positive attitude. The doctor
who invented the artificial heart was
refused entrance into almost every
medical hospital in the United States.
He finally went to Italy to start his
training and eventually persuaded the
Utah Medical School to accept him.
That's the kind of determination we all
have to take a good look at.
Take a look at the Japanese method
of doing things, particularly their team
approach. If you think you can do
something alone you are a fool. No one
ever accomplished anything alone and
no one ever will. It takes more than
brain power to accomplish something.
Earle Nightingale, Radio Commentator
has often said that the people with
really high IQs seldom become mil-
lionaires. They are either teachers,
bench workers or institution people.
The millionaires are the ones who have
learned to work with people.
Nothing disturbs me more than when
I see a farmer talking to a salesman and
he chews the heck out of him and then
he wants a lower price on his feed and
he wants his mill calibrated on the way
out.
I guess this is what I mean by the
team approach. If your association is to
accomplish something, you are going
to have to work together to get it. We
take a great deal of pride in Perth
County for shipping over 500,000 hogs
each year. We think this is really
important. Well, this is the equivalent
of only two pork producers in Quebec
or the equivalent of 3-4 per cent of the
North American continent. And we'll get
blown out of the water if we don't work
together to get what we want. The sun
does not rise and set within the four
walls of your pig barn. The pork
industry is not going to feel the loss of
any one of us, but together they cannot
replace us and together we can do
anything we set our minds to.
I think some of the best resources we
have are people resources. We have the
Ontario Swine A.I. sitting right here on
our doorstep and they are shipping
expertise right here at our back door? I
suggest that if you want to set yourself
a goal, you should identify ten people
who are going to help you accomplish
this goal. I'll bet that when you identify
those ten people, you'll find you have
set your goal a way too low.
Another characteristic I see in suc-
cessful pork producers --- the winners
--- is imagination and creativity. Too
often a pork producer feels a real outing
is going to MacDonald's for a MacRib
or a two day trip to Toronto. We have to
set our dreams a little higher. We have
to start dreaming about those silver
cadillacs, a covered swimming pool and
those twice a year trips to the Carri-
bean.
