Swapping and selling
squealing freebies
Do you have a nanny goat but need a
butter churn? The answer to your
dilemna is the swap shop on your local
radio station. Limited resources have
made the barter system enjoy a new
height in popularity. You can get oven
ready ducks, a top coat for your
husband worn only once and blades for
your disc grinder. One gentleman had a
pair of rubber boots for sale several
days in a row and on the last call even
offered to deliver them to the local
feedstore on a Friday if someone
wanted to buy them.
The public school that our children
attend recently added a swap and sell
board in the main hall of the school The
kids seem to use it with zest and the
ads fascinated me. Items posted on this
board are all very necessary to the
growth and development of youngsters,
especially the pet advertisements.
One ad, dramatically done in black
and red, had the deal of the year. A free
hamster. The ad warned that the ham-
ster squealed a lot and the free house
that came with it had to be cleaned
often. I'm sure that any mother that has
just bundled the last noisy messer to
school would be thrilled to have him or
her come home with this freebie that
squeals a lot and has to be cleaned
often.
Another enterprising student had
popcorn for sale, 250 a bag or two for
40c. The ad urged you to pop right over
and get some. I wonder how Mom feels

about the little business genius slaving
over a hot stove after school and having
popcorn here, there and everywhere?
Some of the ads take the objections
of parents into account. There were
some gray and black bunnies for sale,
but you couldn't get them without a
note from your parents. Think of the
vigorous coaxing and juvenile reasoning
that parents will have to endure so that
these little bunnies will find a home.
One buyer's ad was short and to the
point, "I want a watch that works good
but doesn't need much money". I have
been careful to put mine on again after
I do the dishes, and not leave it on the
window sill.
Things haven't changed all that much
from my childhood; they still swap
hockey cards, not bent of course, and
all types of comic books. These things
seem to be the mainstay of growing up.
There were also a few Star Wars games
that if I remember right are as noisy as
a gaggle of geese. The parents sure
won't miss those items from the toy
collection.
One seller had a dirt bike for sale, he
had driven it for two years and was
proud to announce that it still had tires.
Another student was a collector. He
wanted spoons for his collection, and
made it quite clear that he was not
interested in those he could eat with.
This new bulletin board has sure
increased the rummaging through the
toy boxes and drawers and closets for
items that would appeal to others. The
kids bring home a used goodie from
someone else, and find it a treasure.
Also, it is teaching them the basic
principle of farming, trade if at all
possible. [ !
