HATS OFF TO 4-H LEADERS
by Rhea Hamilton
Our young farmers today have gotten a
lot of their beginnings right at home on
the farm under the guidance and leader-
ship of the volunteer 4-H leaders.
At the annual awards night in Clinton
recently, two leaders were presented with
certificates honouring their twenty years
of service to the organization.
Murray Scott, R.R. 1 Belgrave, started
out as a youngster in 4-H himself and has
gone on to pass the information and
knowledge to other youngsters these past
twenty years. Murray has a very good idea
just what the kids are up against. He is a
former winner of the top 4-H trophy, the
citizenship award.
Although Murray claims the whole job
is not that time consumingathe Belgrave

Blyth Beef Calf Club does run through a
busy time of the year for farmers. Begin-
ning in April, the member meet monthly
and there are committee meetings in bet-
ween before the club folds up later in the
fall.
This year the club had their first show
sale in Brussels and Murray is quite pleas-
ed with the work the members did.
The one thing that Murray has noticed
over the years while working with kids on
their calves,is it takes several years before
they realize the many opportunities and
benefits that 4-H work can give them.
This award story had another happy en-
ding. Murray met his wife while they were
both members of 4-H and now his wife
works beside him in the barn.
Ross Eedy also received a twenty year
Murray Scott
certificate but his work with the 4-H
organization started after his son joined a
local club. Ross leads the Dungannon
Beef club and sees the youngsters joining
now as somewhat younger but working
harder.
The leaders estimated that 90 percent
of the youngsters in agriculture have had
some exposure through 4-H clubs.
While we honour the members of the
multitude of 4-H clubs we can't forget the
work and dedication of the leaders.
Other leaders recognized for years of
service were; Graeme Craig, R.R. 1
Walton; Hank Winkel R.R. 1 Gorrie for 15
years; Ray Rasenberg, R.R. 3 Zurich and
Neil Vincent tielgrave for 10 years and
Robyn Theedom of Clinton was recogniz-
ed for 5 years.
