Making your
own gifts
by Gisele Ireland
Gift giving at Christmas time should
not be a burden on the giver. Both the
giver and the receiver should receive
pleasure from the exchange. In these
times, when the dollar has to be stretched
a dozen ways, it makes sense to plan
practical and useful items for the people
on your gift list. Now is the time to plan
for the festive season and enjoy the
pleasure of making them and the pride in
giving them.
The plastic drawered cabinets that are
inexpensive to buy lend themselves to a
variety of gift ideas. For men, who are
always hunting for different sized nuts
and bolts, they are a great organizer of
these items. The whole family can get
together and fill the drawers with the
items he uses the most. The fronts can be
labelled to show what each drawer
contains. In the barn these cabinets are
also useful. They will hold a variety of
medical supplies like needles and syringes,
suture equipment and small pliers that are
used for clipping teeth. The items are easy
to find and all stored together. For
mother, these cabinets will hold needles,
thread, buttons and elastic. The sewer will
have all the items at her fingertips instead
of all snarled together in a drawer. The
drawers can be labelled to determine what
colour thread is in each section. Another
item for the home sewer could be a box
made of sturdy material that had dividers
the exact size of pattern envelopes that
would enable the patterns to be filed in an
upright position and easy to leaf through.
They could be decorated in a floral design

or made of grained wood that can be
sanded and stained. This project can be
handled by a child with some supervision.
If Dad or Mom wear coveralls a lot, a
new pair with their name embroidered on
them or fancy decals on them make a nice
gift. Warm, hand knit, mittens and hats
are always welcome to those who spend
time outdoors in the chilly weather.
Aprons are not only for the kitchen.
One constructed of a heavy fabric, with a
few large pockets, is a handy gift for the
barn. No one, especially the ladies, ever
has enough pockets to carry all the items
needed when treating animals. These
aprons will allow you to save your clothes
while treating animals and carry all the
items with you that you need. Your
imagination can go wild when decorating
these gift items.
Large empty cans make wonderful gifts
if they are used with imagination. You
can cut out lids, from wood with a knob
glued on top, and decorate to match the
kitchen for a handy set of cannisters. The
same Targe can, can be left open and
decorated and filled with handy utensils
like wooden spoons and spatulas and
slotted spoons and kept handy where they
are used the most. You could take one of
these cans, make a lid for it and decorate
it for a cookie jar. For a child who loves
cookies, fill it with their favourite and
attach the recipe so it can be replenished.
If you have a lot of time, consider one
of the yarn tied quilts. They can be
layered with a lot of filling and are
relatively quick and simple to make and
are so cuddly on cold nights. You can get
hockey players for the sports enthusiast
and cuddly animals for another. Children
will remember the giver when cold winds
blow.
No child ever has enough warm mittens
or hats. If the child is old enough,
consider giving them a simple pattern,
yarn and needles and offer free instruc-
tions for learning to make their own. This
will be a great pastime in the winter
months as well as learning a useful skill.
The only boundary in gift giving is your
imagination and supplies available. Take
the time now to plan gifts that will
pleasure the receiver and won't dent your
pocket book.
