ROBINSON RR #4WALTON, ONT NOK1Z0 TEL. 519-345-2317 PG. 44 THE RURAL VOICE/DECEMBER 1982 ONE MAN'S OPINION Fighting for peace By Adrian Vos. Remembrance Day is behind us and Christmas, the festival of peace, is just around the corner. We hear it from stores and street corners and we try to express our goodwill through gift giving to those we love and respect. This time of year Christianity is at its best. After all,the theme of the Christian religion is love. Love to God and from God; love to our neighbors on this global village. We celebrate the occasion that Christ came to us to bring that love and peace, and we are merry. Sometimes we spoil it by drinking too much, but by -and -large it is a happy time. However, when we think back to what we have accomplished in nearly 2,000 years, we have to admit to a dismal performance. In the name of the messenger of peace,we began by killing Saracens through crusades; and Jews because other Jews had killed Christ. And through the ages we have continued killing (and hating) in the name of love. Many times the churches were so self-righteous that any difference in interpretation of the Bible, their textbook, was punishable by death. There was the Inquisition; there was Calvin's Geneva; there was Cromwell; there were the witch hunts. In addition there were and are persecutions by ostracizing and harrassment, such as the Jehovah Witnesses in Quebec during Du Plessis' regime and by the Amish today in Pennsylvania. The Christian love tenet that only those without sin be allowed to throw the first stone has turned into a cruel caricature. For eight or more years Irish Christians have been murdering other Irish Christians, aided and abetted by Canadian and American Christians. For many years Christian Lebanese have been murdering Muslim Lebanese and vice versa. Ever since they conquered the Cape Colony, Afrikaan settlers have enslaved black natives for reasons they found in some grotesque interpretation of the Bible. However, to blame Christianity for all those excesses is like blaming marriage for wife beating or sex for child abuse. If there were no marriage there wouldn't be wives and without sex there wouldn't be children. Those people who call themselves Christians, be it Catholic or Protestant in Ireland or in Lebanon, and then commit atrocities are committing a double offence. They try to put the blame for their misdeeds on Christ because they claim to belong to His church. This is character assasination at its worst. When I see the leaders of the IRA, I see the zealots the fanatics condemned by Jesus during his sojourn among us. When I see today's peace marchers against the Cruise Missile etc, I see people who prefer to be dominated by Russia over death by Russia. When I see the arguments of those who believe in peace through strength, I see people who would rather die than be Russian ruled. When I look at them both 1 see people who want peace. Let us not fall into the old trap of fighting each other out of love for peace. This is the time of year that we are reminded of the message of God's "goodwill to men". Let us as individuals show it. Let us try to follow the real teaching of the "Man of Peace". Let us try to understand our neighbors wherever in the world they may be. Let us try to act like real Christians are supposed to. Let us start with ourselves.
