OMAF names special
project co-ordinator
H.E. McGill has been appointed special
projects co-ordinator in the Technology
and Field Services division of the Ministry
of Agriculture and Food. Formerly
director of the ministry's livestock
branch, McGill is continuing a 34 -year
career with the ministry.
In making the announcement, Assistant
Deputy Minister Dr. J.C. Rennie said
McGill will co-ordinate the development
of action plans to deal with several critical
issues in the livestock industry.
"Mr. McGill brings to his new assign-
ment a unique understanding of the needs
of producers and the competitive pres-
sures they face in both the domestic and
international market," Dr. Rennie added.
Initially, McGill will lead four major
projects over the next two year. The first
will investigate opportunities for more
efficient pork production through im-
proved management practices. McGill
will identify needed changes in the
operation of the industry and then
develop a tailor-made educational exten-
sion program for pork producers.
The second project will assess the
future of Ontario beef production systems
in the rapidly changing economic environ-
ment. In conjunction with animal and
plant scientists and the beef cattle
industry, existing research will be evalu-
ated and new studies commissioned if
necessary.
He will also study the effect of tingle
voltage on the performance of livestock
and poultry, particularly dairy cattle and
co-ordinate the ministry's activity with
Ontario Hydro and other agencies on this
issue.
Finally, McGill will oversee the evalua-
tion of canola as a livestock feed and
estimate the potential Ontario demand for
the crop.
Stabilization plan pays $1.9 million
Ontario will pay $1.9 million to corn
and soybean producers enrolled in the
1979-1981 stabilization plan for corn,
soybeans, white beans and winter wheat,
Agriculture and Food Minister Dennis
Timbrell announced..
Participating producers will receive
payments for 1981 production of $13.55
per tonne for soybeans and $2.01 per
tonne for corn. One-third of the payment
is covered by fees producers paid into the
plan.
"These fees have been earning interest
and any contributions and interest not
needed to cover the producers' one-third
share will be returned to them," Timbrell
said.
Since market prices for winter wheat
and white beans were higher than
stabilized prices, no payments :,re called
for and contributions plus interest will be
returned to registered producers of these
commodities, the minister added.
Cheques for white beans and winter
wheat are expected to be mailed by late
November. Information on making
claims for their 1981 stabilization pay-
ments will be sent to corn and soybean
farmers registered in the Ontario plan.
Barley has been added to the plan for
the current cycle covering 1982, 1983 and
1984.
