Thoughts at Corn Time
Constant deafening, steady, sure
The roar, the working maddening roar
Telling, knowing, gnawing roar,
Upstaged by whine and grind and grate
As stalk and cob and stem and leaf
Succumb to that unkindly mouth —
From up above upon the throne
Above the 80 horse and more
The eyes a vista do behold
The neighbour's bounty and hopeful dreams
The hills shawled now in harvest hues.
Blushing, rouge, rust, orange, gold.
The air one minute warm, then crisp
And bit by bit the crop yields, yields.
It happens every year the same.
The tractor first is keenly preened.
And next the harvester is set
Mutely obediently the wagons march
Lined quickly to rear and off beside
The empty silo stands silent now
Prepared to welcome what nature brings
The awesome gruesome blower next
Is rolled in place
And now its time...
Line, soldier -like with true precision
Each corn plant stands and waits her turn.
Arms out and waving, coyly waving
Welcoming the murderous beast
Beckoning shyly, slying, beckoning
Ignoring fate's approaching hand..
Their turn seems never yet to come
The beast so slowly churns along
And yet by sundown of that day
They all are gone,
They all are gone.
Do we stand still and wait our turn?
Do we watch fate approach our face?
Do we become the yield of fate
Yet coyly believing we rule our lives?
Who faces fate and moves aside
Life's greater doors perhaps open wide..
