The Rural Voice, 1982-11, Page 41GREY/FEDERATION (cont.) government has been committed to a property tax reform. The present proposal which has been studied in depth by both O.F.A. and affiliated County Federations is, in its simplest terms, as follows: A re -assessment of farms would result in two separate assessments and tax bills for each farm. One would include all the farm land, farm buildings and structures, the other would be the farm residence. A farmer would receive a total rebate on the taxes for the farm and its farm buildings and would pay the tax bill on the farm residence in the same manner as any town or urban resident. To qualify for the rebate on the farm land,it would be necessary to gross $12,000.00 a year with the farm enterprise. The Government also proposes that this amount would be indexed, so that it would increase over the years in accordance with the published Farm Price Index. Changes to the nex taxes paid on any farm will depend on the relative assessment value of the farm house compared to the assessment on the farm land and buildings. Under this proposal, the typical farm in Grey County would receive a small saving in taxes; those receiving the higher rebate will be the farms with large acreages and extensive farm buildings. Under this proposal the rebates paid would be re -distributed and increased by an estimated $15 million province wide. Although we are unable to describe the program in detail here, we have discussed the most important provisions. DAVI DSON Well Drilling Ltd.
