ANIMAL SCIENCE
Feline Urological
Syndrome: [FUS]
Feline Urological Syndrome is characterized by bladder
infection and either partial or complete blockage of the urinary
passage by sand -like plugs. The most susceptible population are
those cats 1-5 years old, castrated, male, living primarily indoors
and being fed a diet of more than 50% dry food. There is also a
seasonal occurrence -more affected animals are seen in the fall
and spring. One in five cats, once treated, is prone to the
condition again.
CLINICAL SIGNS:
-straining to urinate (this is often mistaken for constipation)
-frequent urination
-urinating in areas other than the litter box
-bloody urine
-strong smelling urine
-frequent licking of an inflamed penis
-non eating
-listless
-painful abdomen (because bladder is inflamed and distended)
If allowed to continue without treatment by a veterinarian:
-vomiting
-depression
-dehydration
-eventually death
PREVENTION:
-increase daily fluid intake and thus urination by adding '/z tsp.
salt daily to food
-always have a fresh, clean water supply
-use a feline diet that is low in calcium, phosphorus and
magnesium (minerals) such as;
-prescription diets available from your veterinarian
-commercial products--9-Lives Liver
--Friskies Beef and Liver Buffet
--Miss Mew Country Dinner
-homemade diet: 1 lb. regular ground beef (not ground chuck)
braised lightly and retain the fat '/ lb. liver
uncooked or braised lightly
1 cup cooked rice
1 tsp. cooking oil
1 tsp. limestone (calcium carbonate = 33%
calcium)
Combine all ingredients. Yield 3/4 Ib. Feed 1/4-1/2 lb./cat daily.
NOTE: No specific flavor of commercial cat food can be
recommended without stating the brand and vice versa.
Also, the amount of ash in the diet is meaningless
unless the minerals making up the ash content of the
diet are stated. (eg: phosphorus, magnesium and
calcium.)
-use of urinary acidifiers to decrease pH of urine
-have a litter box readily available and change it daily
