The Rural Voice, 1982-09, Page 30Energy management for Canadian farmers A survey to aid in the development of cost-efficient energy programs for the Canadian agricultural sector has been undertaken by Statistics Canada. The Farm Energy Use Survey is a joint project with Agriculture Canada and Energy, Mines and Resources Canada Under the National Energy Program. It will provide detailed information on the current use and cost of energy on farms. Farmers were asked energy-related ques- tions such as types of powered equipment used, types of fuel used, storage facilities and energy-saving changes made in the past few years. Data collected through the Survey will be used by farm associations and govern- ments to determine the need for addition- al energy conservation and fuel substitu- FARM ADVICE tion programs, stand-by programs for emergency energy distribution, research projects and information programs for the farming community. Statistics Canada interviewers visited a sample of 7,000 farms between June 28 and July 23 and the results of the survey will be available early in 1983. Flax gains popularity in Bruce county Flax. as a cash crop, has gained considerable popularity in Bruce County. Sandy Little, of Anderson Flax Products Limited, states that the acreage has increased from four thousand last year to over seven thousand this year. Mr. Little attributes the low cost of production to the crop's popularity. It is sown at the same time as spring grains and needs a little extra nitrogen. The flax is refined at the Maple Leaf Mills in Windsor and the oil cake by-product is used as a protein supplement in animal rations. Flax is presently trading at around 58 per bushel.
