Bruce and Huron Counties host liaison meeting
by Gisele Ireland
On June 13th. Bruce and Huron Counties hosted a liaison
meeting with the counties of Dufferin. Grey. Wellington
Perth and Waterloo.
The meeting was held at the farm of Brian and Giscli.
Ireland and a pork barbecue followed the meeting which the
families from these counties enjoyed.
Under discussion was the involvement of the counties in
"Agriculture Appreciation Week" which is designated for
Oct. 4th week.
The idea of bringing the consumer to the farms appealed
to all the counties as a way of telling the farmer's story .
Plans are in progress for several counties to participate in
this project and travel agents have been contacted to
promote this idea. A bus trip into a county at a time when
they are harvesting their main crop would be an ideal
method of explaining why we have the machinery we do and
what it actually does. Depending on the main product of the
county, the tours would last all summer and fall. Apple
producers would be ready for such a tour in the fall while
fruit and vegetable producers would be toured in the
summer. Livestock farms could be worked in at any point
The idea of the tours would be to involve consumer families
with farm families and possibl' billet them overnight at
farm homes. Local events such as fairs and dances and
barbecues could also be involved. Each county would
decide what potential they had and work from there. Some
of the counties in the province are doing mall displays and
exhibits at larger fairs close to urban centres where
consumers would likely be present in the summer and fall
months. When "Agriculture Appreciation Week" arrived
in the fall. the consumer would be more aware of exactly
what he was to appreciate.
The Board of Directors of the Bruce County Federation of
Agriculture met at a regular meeting on June 15th at the
Walkerton OMAF Boardroom.
After hosting along with Huron county.the county liaison
meeting, it was felt by the board that there was not enough
liaison done between the different counties.
A resolution was passed that Bruce County Federation of
Agriculture invite a different county to the regular Directors
meeting at least twice a year for dinner and a meeting
following to discuss concerns in different counties and meet
with more directors other than their own county. It became
apparent at the June 13th Liaison meeting that more county
involvement is needed and that the exchange of ideas and
methods could benefit greatly.
