NEW PROTECTION
FOR SELLERS OF
BEEF CA1TLE
On August 1,1982 a new beef cattle financial protection program
will go into effect in the Province of Ontario. It will provide
protection for beef producers and other sellers of beef cattle
against default by buyers.
WHAT IT IS: It includes the following features:
• All of the following purchasers of slaughter and feeder cattle
will require a licence by August 1, 1982:
o commission firms at Ontario stockyards
o community sales operators
o packing plant operators
o slaughterhouse operators
o country dealers
• All payments for slaughter and feeder cattle must be made
within 48 hours.
• A fund will be created to provide compensation for sellers of
beef cattle in cases where there is default on payments by the
licensed purchaser.
• Compensation will be at the rate of 90%.
NOTE: The program does not apply to producer to producer
sales.
HOW IT OPERATES: The new compensation fund will be
created through:
• A payment of 20 cents per head to the fund. On a direct sale,
both buyer and seller pay the 20 cents. On a consignment
sale, each of the buyer, the agent and the seller will pay
20 cents.
• The fund will be administered by a Board composed of repre-
sentatives of the Ontario Cattlemen's Association, the Canadian
Meat Council, operators of community sales, The Toronto
Livestock Exchange, The Ministry of Agriculture and Food and
the public.
