Monthly meeting minutes
-President Gerry Fortune chaired the May Members meeting of
the Huron County Federation of Agriculture. A motion to adopt
the minutes of the last meeting as printed in the Rural Voice by
Tony McQuail, seconded by Bill Wallace, Carried.
Merle Gunby. our OFA representative told of a meeting
planned for May 19/82 with Finance Minister McEachen with 60
farm leaders from across Canada to request Farm Credit money.
He also suggested for individuals to write personal letters to
McEachen or to get in touch with your MP. Following is a
'paragraph' from the open letters from the Canadian Federation
of Agriculture written to the Minister of Finance for Canada.
"The priority need is clear, and is easily met. The Farm Credit
Corporation now has the authority to borrow funds. It should be

empowered to borrow in very substantial quantities. and
immediately on a tax concessional basis, so that it can lend at 10%
interest to the farmer. (What 'substantial quantities' could mean
in dollars cannot be assessed with precision, but as an indication.
$1 billion would provide a moderate loan of $100.000 to only
10,000 producers, or four to five percent of Canadian commercial
farms.). This would make a reality of the aborted Small Business
Bond policy, only carried out by the Farm Credit Corporation.

President Gerry introduced Bill Wolfe from Dobbinton. Ontario
of the Canadian Farm Survival Group. He was one of the
organizers of the Canadian Farm Survival Group, as well he was
involved with the beginning of OBEX. a former Director of the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture and at one time was 2nd. Vice
President of Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Bill told of the
background of the organization, and of the problems of farmers.
why they are having problems. and several actual incidents he has
been involved in the past year through the Canadian Farm
Survival Group. Questions were answered by Bill after which Bill
Wallace presented Mr. Wolfe with a gift.
NEW BUSINESS:
Doug Garniss of HCFA reported on a meeting he had attended
with 2 members of Dufferin Fed. of Agric. with Dennis Timbrell
on Absentee Foreign Ownership. This group came out of a
seminar which was held in March by the University of Guelph in
conjunction with HCFA. They presented a brief to Timbrell
expressing their concerns on what they think should be done
about "Absentee Foreign Ownership". This group is now totally
independent and not connected with the Federation.

In appreciation
The HCFA held a surprise farewell dance for Bill and Eleanor
Crawford at the White Carnation, Holmesville, March 27. Bill. the
first fieldman hired by the OFA has been promoted to Manager of
Insurance and Administration Service at head office, Toronto. He
will be moving at the end of the school year.
At the dance HCFA's Public Relations Committee head Fran
McQuail and 1st vice president Tony McQuail presented Bill with
an ink print of the Huron Tract and Eleanor received a stained
glass trinket box.
The dance was well attended, including those whom Bill
persuaded to join the OFA making Huron County the largest
membership involved in the OFA. Bill will be missed by all.
