The Rural Voice, 1982-06, Page 13Why I'm proud to be
a farmer's daughter
Why shouldn't I be proud?
I live on a big. beautiful, farm full of
work. When I was younger 1 lived in town.
My father longed to live in the country.
We went to my cousin's farm every
Saturday and took my puppy, Duffy with
us. I loved it!
It was quiet, there was fresh air, I could
play with my cousins and help with the
work. One winter we sold our house and
bought a farm. It needed a lot of fixing. My
mother. sister and my brother didn't want
to move. Danny, my brother never did get
to liking the country much but the others
did.
We fixed the house and barn up and
picked stones out of the field. Our barn
was set up for 175 beef cattle and about 60
pigs. Dad let me bed the cows and clean
the pigs. These were just some of my
chores!
1 still had to help with the dishes and
keep my room clean!
I was proud of my father for two
reasons. He had bought a farm, worked at
Hydro, and had kept the farm running.
After five years on the farm Dad was still
working. My sister had moved out and
things weren't going right on the farm.
Dad died a sudden death and left my
mother, my brother and 1 to find for
ourselves on the farm.
We've rented the barn and the land out
and are trying to make do with what we
have. I think my father was a brave. hard
working, intelligent man to buy a farm and
I'm proud of both of them.

ON THE
FARM
Morning breaks
Soft rays of dawn
Creep over the fields
Sounds of the animals
Disturb the silence
Sounds of cows,
dog and sheep.
Mooing,
Barking and bleating
Sounds of tractors,
Going to the fields.
That is the sounds,
Of the farm in the morning.

I want to live
on the farm
I want, I want to live on a farm,
But I don't want to go in the barn,
We have four horses and thirty cows,
We have twenty calve3, and fifteen sows.
I'm moving away from our farm, you see.
I won't see the farm again.S
But some day I think 1 will,
I'm moving to Lucknow,
But not to a farm.
Oh, 1 wish 1 was going to live on a farm!
Even though I don't want to go in the barn.
I hope we have pigs,
If we move on a farm.
1 think some day I'm going to live on a
farm.
At our new house there are water falls.
I can go fishing but not feed the cows,
Maybe there'll be some horses to ride on
Oh how I'd like some horses to ride on!
The farm I live on now is very old.
That's all 1 want to say,
But oh how 1 want to live on a farm!
