our 1st prize winners.
It's hard to believe that, as this month's cover says, this Is our
fourth annual kids' contest Issue. Work on this Issue, which has
always appeared in June Is one of the best things about
producing Rural Voice.
Members of the editorial board poured over close to 1,000
individual entries this year to pick fewer than 50 winners and an
even smaller number to appear in the magazine. It's an
agonizing job, nearly every entry has some merit. That's why
we've decided to try and use a few of the submissions In the
magazine all year round. Watch for them.
As usual, we've finished the Job full of optimism about the
creativity and problem solving ability of the next generation.
They're thinking about what they're doing; they're concerned
about farming, and watch out, year 2000; they've got plenty to
offer.
Thanks to donations from a group of public-splrlted Rural
Voice advertisers (whose names appear elsewhere In the
magazine) the kids' contest winners will receive larger sized
cheques than usual. They'll be in the mall early in June.
It's perhaps appropriate that our main story this Issue Is a
profile of a gentleman who's been farming since the age of
sixteen. He's Bruce County farmer, and chairman of the Ontario
Milk Producers' Marketing Board, Ken McKinnon.
Finally, we hope readers like the Rural Voice's slightly new
look. We're printing the entire magazine on better quality paper,
as part of a continuing effort to Improve service but keep our
costs In line.
We're still tabulating results from our readership survey
earlier this spring, but IndicatJons are you like Rural Voice
because it has something different to offer. Thanks to those who
responded; we'll be printing some of your comments and acting
on more, in future issues.
