Meeting theme:
Establishing the young farmer
The meeting was held in the Wroxeter Community Centre on
Tuesday, March 9, sponsored by Howick Twp. Fed. of Agric.
with approximately seventy in attendance.
President Gerry Fortune welcomed everyone. The minutes of
the last meeting were passed "as printed" in Rural Voice, on a
motion by Bill Mann, seconded by Bob Coleman. Carried.
Bob Coleman, Chairman of the "Young Farmers Committee"
of Huron County introduced the three guests for the evening.
John Stevens, head of the Farm Business Management at
Centralia Ag. College, Don Pullen. Huron County Ag. Rep., and
Richard Smelski, the OMAF Swine Specialist for Huron/Oxford
and Perth Counties. The theme of their discussion was
"Establishing the Young Farmer." After each panelist spoke, a
question period followed. Don Pullen read the rules and
stipulations of the "Ontario Farm Adjustment Government
Assistance Program" and had pamphlets available. _
Bob Coleman introduced his Young Farmer committee
members: Dave Drummond, Larry Sturdy, Hans Rasmussen,
Bert Saunders and Barry Mason. Dave Drummond thanked the
panelists for their participation.
Don Pullen spoke on the 4-H program starting next week in
Huron for any 12-19 year olds. Interested persons may contact
the Clinton OMAF office.
Merle Gunby reported on the 'Marketing Seminar' he had
attended in Cambridge March 7-8-9, sponsored by OFA. It
proved very interesting with speakers such as Del O'Brien, a
lawyer; Eugene Whelan, Lorne Heard of the Milk Marketing
Committee, Don Slinger, UCO Poultry Producers, Carl Harrison
and Bob Trotter. Also attending was Jack Stafford from Huron
County.
Two resolutions were passed: 1. Whereas two children entered
ISM Cam Bogies property where they injured themselves and
whereas the parents of these children are sueing Mr. Bogie, and
whereas such action if successful would seriously jeopardize the
trespass act that OFA worked so long to have implemented.
Therefore be it resolved that OFA allow their lawyers to assist in
defending Mr. Bogie against such action -moved by Merle
Gunby, sec. by Bill Mann. Carried.
2.Whereas the Federal Seeds Act is hopelessly outdated; and
whereas many present all -day problem weeds are not even listed
in the Act; and whereas available modern technologies make
weed seed tolerances in graded seeds much too high; and
whereas bird -feeder seeds are not regulated at all; and whereas
these weeds have high economic costs to farmers for reduced
yields and chemical treatment. Therefore be it resolved that
HCFA request OFA to petition the Federal Government to
amend the appropriate Act -moved by Doug Garniss, sec. by
Grant Curran. Carried.
Howick Township PrP.-ident Bill Alton thanked everyone for
coming and announce° Howick Twp. Annual Meeting to be held
on March 31. Tickets available at $6 each from all directors.
Adjournament 10:45. Coffee and cookies served by Howick
Township Federation Ladies.
