Grey favours route 3
At the February Directors Meeting at the OMAF Board Room,
Markdale, the directors approved the Insurance Committees
choice of a policy for the coming year. Several topics were
suggested for the Meet the Members brief to be presented
March 20 at Keady.
An agreement has been reached with Rural Voice to send the
magazine to each member at a cost of $1.25 each. Quite a few
new members are needed in the month of March to qualify for
the OFA rebate. Membership drives are on at the present time.
Murray Clarke gave the report of the February OFA Directors
meeting. David George, manager of the Farm Assistance
Program addressed the meeting to explain the program. He said
that when the $60 million allocated is used up and more
applications are waiting they hope the Government will seriously
look into the matter.
Bruce Saunders, chairman of the Hydro Committee said the
hydro route from BNPD is still not definite. Department of
Agriculture representatives are favoring Route No. 3 through
Grey County.
Ruth Hamill for the Education Committee reported that the
Public Speaking Semi -Finals are under way. The finals are in
Durham Community School on March 11. The semi-finals for
Northeast Grey were in the Beaver Valley Community School on
March 3. The three winners were #1 Cindy Shaw, speaking on

Bessie Saunders attended two plowing match meetings as well
as the convention in Toronto. The Grey Plowing Match

work and planning really starts to be ready for 1987.
The president and 1st vice, Don Hill met with the Agriculture
Committee of county council and will meet with the whole county
council on delegation day. I also met with Normanby Federation

the secretary, Ray Robertson, representing the Farm Labour
Pool announced a seminar on March 4 in Hanover. A speaker on
Payroll Deductions told how to use the deduction books and how
to remit. The Youth programs were discussed, that is the Junior
Agriculturists. the Agricrew and Ontario Youth Employment
Program. The afternoon speaker, Jerry Krauter, spoke on
communications, motivation and learning about learning.
The Emergency Planning Order was brought to my attention
by a member. Through contact with Dr. Gus Mitges and Dr. Gary
Gurbin we learn that not much can be done about it until the
government tries to make it law. This Order would give the
government sweeping powers in time of disaster.
The directors decided to join in the woodworkers union Protest
PG. 34 THE RURAL VOICE/APRIL 1982
Rally against high interest rates. About 10 members journeyed
to Hanover to march behind the Grey Federation banner.
Coloring farm fuel is a concern to most farmers and will be
referred to OFA hopefully to organize a letter writing campaign.
A resolution will be prepared re getting the municipal
Municipal Act changed so that a higher levy could be obtained
for the Grey Federation of Agriculture.
The Federation bonspiel was held in Markdale. The last draw
was short two rinks. It was suggested that a different date be
secured to avoid all the other bonspiels.
The men had a good time and everyone took home a prize.
Thanks to Carmen Hamill for setting up the bonspiel and the
catering group for a wonderful dinner. A decision will be made at
the March meeting for times of the spring and summer
