The sort of sunny day that makes the trials and tribulations of living in Western Ontario [at least living in Western Ontario in winter] worthwhile. There's nothing like a little sun and warmth to banish the memories of repeated snowed -in days. days when the car won't start, when you have to run the generator because the hydro's off and when thekids are stuck home from school, driving you and each other crazy. It's our hope that this issue of Rural Voice can likewise banish some of the depression. the fears and trials that many in the farm community are suffering during tough times. We're not saying farm life in Bruce, Grey, Huron and Perth right now is a bed of roses. But it's still a heck ofa lot better than life for the majority of the population in many other countries. Poland and El Salvador come immediately to mind. We've packed this February Rural Voice with good news, with stories about farmers who are cautiously optimistic about their operations, and with good reason. There's a profile ofa member of the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario, a group that's fighting to preserve the family farm. Reporter Rhea Hamilton learned that more than 80 percent of the CFFO's 600 members are active in their organization: surely that's good news. Writer Gisele Ireland traces the roots of the growing farm activist groups in Grey and Bruce Counties and it's inspiring to see farmers band together for mutual support. So far, although everyone predicts that it will change if prices stay at their current low, Western Ontario is corn country. This month in Rural Voice Sheila Gunby explores current research aimed at that disastrous insect, the corn rootworm. Solutions are being sought, but more time and money is needed the experts tell her. At least they're working on the problem. We think we've got recipes this month that'll help your family fight the winter blahs. News from some of our Junior Farmers who attended a national conference recently will certainly make you feel the future of farming is in good hands. And for history buffs, there's a short story about the new history of the Ontario Junior Farmers. You'll probably want a copy. Rural Voice tells you where you can buy it. Then our Up and Coming page lists countless future meetings. You could learn and enjoy yourself, at a lot of them. All in all, kural Voice has a great deal of confidence in the farm community our readers are part of We trust you share it.
