creates a new breed of parasites, the above named inspectors.
They are more bothersome than the jet -set breed of parasites. as
they stifle initiative more effectively than an army of absentee
landlords.
Our financial papers sometimes write glowing reports about the
highly successful entrepreneur who, with nothing in his pocket to
start has gained control of a conglomerate of companies in 10 or 25
years.
Examine the process a bit closer and we see that the man has
added nothing to any product output, but a great deal to his own
and his associates' pockets.
Does Hudson's Bay contribute more to the country's economy
since its take-over? Or do any of the other coups we read about as
coups by one financier or another? Me thinks not.
The various companies under Conrad Black's or similar
moguls' control, operate exactly as before.
Sometimes the whole nibelungen mountain collapses into a
mess of fraud and bankruptcy as witness the insurance company
scandal of some years ago which brought a number of investors to
disaster.
Stock market investment is based on equity investment and
provides money for capital expenditure and modernization. Here
the earned interest, considered sinful by Aristotle and Erasmus,
stimulates the whole economy, thereby bringing benefits to all.
But, a market player who doesn't reinvest his interest income, he
too becomes a parasite on the industry he previously helped to
serve.
The purest solution would be to have a person's wealth revert to
society at time of death and let the children carve their own life.
But that is impractical. It would also be unjust. as most parents do
much of their work for their children.
Is there anyone out there who can invent a just and equitable
system?
