With my
best wishes
Everyone writes about Christmas. There are stories of how we
have destroyed the meaning of Christmas with commercials and
Santa Clauses in every department store. There are stories of
bankruptcies that have occurred by over-
zealous use of charge cards to keep up with
the Jones' in the gift department. There are
stories of how people's lives have been
changed with the magic of the season and
heart stirring stories of love and peace.
I am going to write about the realities of
Christmas. Christmas is beautiful for adults
because of the children. There is nothing
more tailor made to make you cry than little
children singing "Silent Night." The con-
certs at that time of the year make you swell
with pride. You have heard the Christmas
story year after year, but each time the
children manage to inject a newness to it that
brings tears to your eyes and hope for the future. Why else are we
here? To fashion a world and future for our children.
Christmas is the time of year you make a glutton of yourself.
Everyone plies you with homemade goodies and candies. It is a
part of love to want to nourish people and fatten them up. I made a
cake a few years ago that was a real zinger. You soaked the fruit in
brandy and then soaked the finished cake in more brandy while
storing it. When it came to the taste test it made people delirious. I
love trying new things, whether they be food or customs. Our part
of the country has so much to offer of both. All the people have
their own customs and special treats that are made in that season
and I'm willing to try them all. I won't fit into anything I own come
January but it will have been worth it.
I love buying presents for people that are different. Anyone can
get a bottle of bubble bath that ends up in septic tank. You give
people too much in the line of soaps. talcums and perfumes and
they might get the idea you think they have a problem.
I like buying shirts for men. Anyone can get screwdrivers and
gloves and trouble lights. Shirts are special. I bought one for a
brother-in-law five years ago that is still around. It is a bottle
green in colour with vibrant orange flowers all over it. He won a
most colourful shirt contest with it at a family reunion. He found
he had outgrown it a week after that and passed it on to another
brother-in-law. He wore it for a couple of years and the comments
he got while wearing it made him outgrow it and pass it along. At a
Farmily christening last week. I noticed that the fourth male in
the family was wearing it. This made me feel like I had
purchased a present that had a lasting quality. As each one
outgrew it they passed along. It still looks like new. The only
discordant factor in the whole thing is that none of them have
changed dimensions in the last five years. When they are done
with it I'll request that 1 can have it and wear it to the barn and
make the pigs happy. Presents like that sure out last the old
bottle of after shave.
Whatever way you choose to celebrate the Christmas
Season ... make it a time of joy and love and peace. My wishes to
all my readers total that that you find the joy that comes with this
special time of the year.
