Before we get into what's in this month's Rural Voice. we
want to tell you about next month. Now. we're a small magazine.
So there was some excitement here when a call came through
from Washington D. C. last week from the office of former
agriculture secretary Bob Berglund.
Some background is in order. Months ago. planning an issue
that would touch on farming in other countries, we thought the
former ag. secretary, with a reputation as a fighter for farmers,
would make an excellent guest columnist. Off went our letter,
addressed in care of someone we hoped could reach him. That
was in March.
As months passed our request to such a big-time figure
became a joke we threw around at editorial board meetings.
Then lo and behold we hear from Berglund's office and the
man will be writing, we hope on concerns that farmers in our
country and his have in common, in next month's Rural Voice,
Watch for it.
Now, just so you don't think we're getting uppity. here's what
farm writer Peter Hohenadel says about Rural Voice in the latest
issue of the Eastern Canadian Farm Writers Federation
newsletter: "This news is taken from the Rural Voice, a relative
newcomer to the farm journal scene, and a magazine to watch.
It's certainly the best regional ag magazine being published in
Ontario at this time. Keep up the good work! "
Bragging over, here's what's on tap this month:
Writer Herb Shoveller chronicles the efforts of a local farmer
to get the fire safety measures included in his barn reflected in a
break on his insurance premiums. It isn't that simple. the
insurance industry replies.
For a related story a Bruce County family who went through
what every farmer dreads. a barn fire. talked to writer Gisele
Ireland about the long slow climb back to economic health.
Then Dean Robinson visits Perth County's ag office and
profiles the staff there. Chances are you'll learn lots about these
hard working people and the services OMAF offers area
residents. In future months. Rural Voice will be introducing you
to the OMAF personnel in Grey. Huron and Bruce counties too.
