Bruce OFA gaining members
The Bruce County Federation of Agriculture met at the OMAF
boardroom in Walkerton March 24. In attendance were: Borden
Fenton, Harold Poechman. Doug Jones, Peter Mason, John
MacAuley. R.J. Cobean. Raymond Fischer. Les Ribey, Harold
Schlorff. Brian Ireland. Ted Fischer. Evcrck Monk. Don Ahrens,
Murray Crich. Glenn Sawyer. Anold Misch. and Bob Leslie.
Borden Fenton introduced Peter Mason. Sales Representa-
tive for Canfarm.
AGENDA
Moved by Harold Sch.Iorff, seconded by Brian Ireland that
they add OFA Report. high interest rates. and delete Report
on Press at Public Meetings, Farm Labour Pool Report.
Discussion of Directors Meetings for summer months, and
Resolutions. Carried
MINUTES
Moved by Murray Crich. seconded by John MacAuley that thc
minutes be adopted as distributed.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Moved by Doug Jones, seconded by Harold Poechman that the
monthly statement be accepted. The total receipts for the month
were 993.76 and total expenses were $2.292.97 The total amount
in the bank account is $4,243.65.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter from Gary Gurbin. M.P. saving that a strikc situation
existed between the federal government and its veterinary
scientists who inspect meat carcasses for disease after slaughter.
Borden Fenton received a phone call from Eugene Whelan's
secretary saying that it was only a sick day and not a strike.
A letter from Ralph Barrie asking for nominations for the
Annual OFA Media Award and the nominations have to be in by
May 1.
' Brian Ireland will do a write-up on Cliff Robb from CKNX.
Moved by Ray Fischer. seconded by Ted Fischer that they pick
Cliff Robb.
A letter from Dufferin Federation of Agriculture asking for
support on a resolution about foreclosures on farm properties
because of high interest rates.
BONSPIEL
Borden Fenton gave a short report on the Curling Bonspiel and
said the people would like to move the bonspiel to a different rink
next year.
MEMBERSHIP
Don Ahrens reported that they would be canvassing in Arran
Twp. and Huron Twp. March 25. 1981.
The Directors gave Don a vote of thanks for all the work he has
done on the membership drives.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
John MacAuley passed around a form from OFA asking
questions on how active our county's PR Committee is.
JR. FARMERS
Les Ribey reported this week was Jr. Farmers Week and that
they are sending 18 members to a conference and they are also
raising funds for the March -of -Dimes.
OFA REPORT
Brian Ireland said that OFA_ wanted case histories of farmers
who were having financial difficulties because of high Interest
rates.
Moved by Brian Ireland, seconded by R.J. Cobean that they
call an emergency meeting of the Executive for Thurs. March 26.
1981 at the Hanover Office at 8 p.m. to discuss a course of action
for Bruce County Federation of Agriculture to take. The directors
were also asked to find farmers with financial problems and
bring them to their regional director. Carried.
FIELDSTAFF REPORT
Grey County wanted to get in touch with Ralph Barrie to talk
with individual farmers about problems with high interest rates.
Brian Ireland said he would take him around Bruce County if he
came.
Bob Leslie said that the OFA Committee Minutes could b(
sent from OFA to the county for each committee chairman. Bruce
County thought each member on the committee should get one.
Bob stated that the OFA Rebate should be over $1,600.
Bruce County will soon have 1400 members and that will be
50% of the census farms in Bruce County. There is o my one
other county in Ontario with that ratio. -
CANFARM
Peter Mason stated that accounting firms arc the agencies for
Canfarm.
ALL ('ANDIDATES MEETING
Harold Poechman said that the meetings were well attended
and the lunch committee did a good job.
REPORT ON ONT. CONFERENCE
Doug Jones gave an extensive report on the Ontario
Conference. Doug felt the conclusions were drawn before the
meeting and it was just a chance to sound -off.
SEMINAR IN CAMBRIDGE
Doug Jones gave another good report on thc Marketing
Seminar. Doug said the seminar laid out all the problems that
farmers have to deal with.
AREA OFFICE
Borden Fenton reported they had an Arca Office Meeting on
March 10, 1981. The two counties bought a new photocopier and
Grey County has taken a loan from Bruce County to help pay for
it. The loan will be at 14% for 2 years.
BNPD
Borden Fenton reported on his trip to the BNPD when William
Davis was there. He was disappointed in what he heard and saw,
but enjoyed the free dinner.

/an Grant rink wins FofA bonspiel
The Bruce County Federation of Agriculture's annual curling
bonspiel was held in the Paisley Curling Club on Friday, March
13, 1981.
The winner of the 11:00 a.m. araw and winner of the
co-operators Trophy was Ian Grant's rink from Teeswater.
Other winners on the 11:00 a.m. draw were 2nd place Harvey
Lerch, 3rd place Jack MacKinnon and consolation was Don
Fenton.
Winner on the 9:00 a.m. draw was Bernard Cotter. 2nd place
Don McArthur. 3rd place Allen Gregg and consolation went to
Jim MacKinnon.
