get militant
The Grey County Federation of Agriculture's annual "Mect
the Members" was held on April 4. 1981 at the Rocklyn
Community Centre. Gary Gurhin M.P.. Gus Mitges M.P.. and
Bob McKessock M.P.P. were the members of parliament
present. Warden of Grey County Maurice Brown and Euphrasia
Twp. Reeve Marshall Saunders were also special guests present
at the meeting.
President Bessie Saunders. Bruce Woodhouse of Pork
Producers, Keith Davenport of the Milk Producers. and Sam
Lemon of the Cattlemen's Association each presented a brief to
the members of parliament.
Gary Gurbin, M.P., felt that a farmer who is in financial
difficulty should be looking into the small business loan that is
available to farmers who incorporate. Hc felt that it would be a
very good way to get operating capital for their business.
Gus Mitges. M.P. felt that farmers should take a more militant
stand towards the government. It might make the government
take notice of the agricultural society. Farmers are tired of
waiting four years for policies to come through.
Bob McKessock. M.P.P. was interested in getting the
provincial government to help out the farmers more like Quebec.
Quebec farmers can compete with high interest rates because
they can borrow cheap money. be guaranteed good prices for
their produce and are able to buy cheap livestock. Mr.
McKessock felt that quotas were needed for Beef and Pork
producers and should be done at the same time.
There were also other topics of interest brought up such as:
Right to Farm Legislation. Protect Saturday Mailings. the
Veterinary's sick day. and Canagrex.
