Township, representing Gary Harron, chairman of the Bruce
County Economic and Development Committee; Don White,
representative from Ontario Hydro as public relations officer for
Bruce and Grey; Barry Schmidt, partner in a local real estate
development firm, Huron Ridge, and Dr. Gary Gurbin, the local
Member of Parliament. Mr. John Pazulla, representing the
Ministry of Industry and Tourism was also present at the
meeting.
The meeting was well attended and a very enthusiastic
question period followed.
Mr. John McCauley, second vice-president thanked the panel
and all those who had contributed to the informative meeting.
DIRECTORS' MEETING
JANUARY 26, 1981
The Bruce County Federation of Agriculture met at the OMAF
boardroom in Walkerton on January 26, 1981. There were in
attendance: Bob Leslie, David Norman, Arnold Misch, Albert
Simpson, Brian Ireland, Everek Monk, Ken Robinson, Evan
Keith, Ian Clarke, Don Ahrens, Ted Fischer, Ray Fischer, Jim
Powers, Allan Smith, Doug Jones, Harold Poechman and Borden
Fenton.
AGENDA Moved by Doug Jones that the agenda be approved.
Seconded by David Norman. •Carried.
MINUTES Moved by Doug Jones that the minutes be adopted as
read. Seconded by Arnold Misch. Carried.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT Moved by Albert Simpson that they
look into moving the $6.000 from the Co-operators to the
Elmwood Credit Union. Seconded by Don Ahrens.
Mary MacDonald stated that there is $7,192.89 in Bruce
County Federation of Agriculture's bank account.
CORRESPONDENCE Harold Poechman read a letter from G ary
Gurbin M.P. Bruce -Grey about Ethanol Production.
Borden Fenton read a letter on the "Ontario Conference of
Agriculture 1981" which would be held on February 4 & 5. The
theme will be "Growing With Agriculture in the 80's". Borden
Fenton said that he would attend. Moved by Albert Simpson that
Bruce County Federation pay the expenses for 2 people to go to
the conference. Seconded by John MacAuley.
Borden Fenton read a letter about Bruce Community Pasture
1980 from Burton Hodges.
Borden read a letter from Lorne Henderson, Ministry of
Agriculture and Food on the Ontario Farm Interest Assistance
Programme.
There was also a letter from the Canadian Federation of
Agriculture on F.C.C. funds provided to young farmers.
Borden Fenton had some questionnaires on Farm Energy to
hand out and received.
Borden read a letter from OFA about the 5% increase in
membership which put the total over 25,000, the highest yet.
Moved by Brian Ireland that they send out copies of the OFA
Food Basket to the directors. Seconded by Ray Fischer.
Doug Jones said that he would consider the task of going to the
"Marketing Seminar Board 1981" on February 22 to Feb. 24.
There is still room for one more person.
Moved by Don Ahrens and seconded by Ray Fischer that the
correspondence was dealt with in full.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Don Ahrens reported on the
canvassing done in Carrick and Culross Townships.
FINANCE COMMITTEE Borden Fenton reported that the OFA
rebate would be 5701.38.
INSURANCE COMMITTEE Moved by Doug Jones that the
insurance committee have a meeting to discuss any changes to
be made on the insurance policy with the Co-operators.
Seconded by John MacAuley.
HYDRO COMMITTEE Borden Fenton asked Glen Sawyer if he
would stand on the hydro committee and he said he would
continue to be on it.
MEETINGS COMMITTEE Moved by Brian Ireland and
seconded by Harold Poechman that they have "Meet the
Members" within the next month to have a sit down business
meal which would be limited to the directors and their wives.
Carried.
John MacAuley reported on the information meeting held on
January 19, 1981 at Underwood Community Centre. He said that
there was a good attendance and that it made the people a little
more aware of what is going on at the B.N.P.D.
PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE Moved by Doug Jones and
seconded by Albert Simpson that the PR committee meet with
the press before the "Meet the Members" meeting commences.
OFA REPORT John MacAuley stated that the 1981 Convention
will be held at the Toronto Downtown Holiday Inn. OFA is
looking into cheaper accommodations such as a university
campus for future conventions.
John also reported that Peter Hannam up-
dated Directors on the status of Canfarm. At a shareholders'
meeting they agreed in principle to a joint venture with IST
COPA, Montreal based and funded by eight co-operatives. IST is
part of the Industrial Life Insurance Company.
John also commented on the guest speaker Professor John
Sokol, University of Toronto, who is a consultant and does work
for The Ontario Pork Board. He has been looking at the problem
of food exports for quite some time and advised the farmers must
be informed on the world situation, and that the establishment of
Canagrex should be a major Canadian priority. Professor Sokol
urges everyone to pressure government for this agency as efforts
must be united.
FARMERS' WEEK Borden Fenton reported on farmers' week
which included a number of good speakers that spoke on
Federation Day.
TAXATION COMMITTEE Moved by Don Ahrens and seconded
by Jim Powers that they form a taxation committee. Carried.
Nominated were: Jim Powers, Allan Smith and Evan Keith.
Carried. Borden Fenton will chair the first meeting.
AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT & PROTECTION ACT Brian
Ireland discussed this Act with the Directors and they decided on
these amendments on: 1. "An Agricultural Approval's
Board" --a farmer should not pay court costs. 2. "Agricultural
Land Protection Board" --agricultural severances should be
approved. Moved by Albert Simpson and seconded by Harold
Poechman that the federation is in favour with this act only in
principle. Carried.
FIELD STAFF REPORT Bob Leslie reported that from Oct. 1/80
to Dec. 31/80 that they increased by 2 memberships. The total is
now 1263 ISM's.
Bob stated that the chairmen for the county committees
could have the minutes of OFA committees sent to them.
Bob asked if they wanted to continue with the directors
receiving the OFA Director's minutes.
Bob brought up the fact of the secretary putting in more time
to keep the work done. They suggested if there is overtime that
the material that needed to be finished would be paid by that
county.
FARM & COUNTRY Bob Leslie stated that they will have to take
and revise the list before the end of two weeks.
TOMMY COOPER AWARD The directors decided that the PR
Committee would think of names to be nominated.
ADVERTISING Borden Fenton stated that in the past the
federation has been advertising in Fall Fair Pamphlets. Moved
by R.J. Cobean and seconded by Doug Jones that they keep
doing so. Carried.
PUBLIC SPEAKING COURSE Moved by Albert Simpson that we
would have the public speaking course for only the directors if we
could get enough people. Seconded by Doug Jones. Carried.
