MONTHLY MEETING January 8, 1981, Clinton Public School There were approximately 60 members present. The minutes of last month's meeting were approved on a motion by Walter Elliott, seconded by Tony McQuail. Carried. CORRESPONDENCE 1. Letter from Lorne Henderson re Agriculture & Food Conference to be held in Toronto, February 4 and 5. Tony McQuail moved that we reply to this notice with a letter asking for a detailed agenda and for them to take note of what was discussed and recommended at the OFA Convention, seconded by John Van Beers. Carried. 2.Letters from Murray Gaunt, Murray Cardiff, and Jack Riddell all signifying the date of Feb. 21/81 suitable for the M.P. dinner. 3. Letter from Huron County 4-H Jr. Club Leaders Association - annual meeting - Jan. 14/81 - Gerry Fortune to go. 4. Letter from Lorne Henderson re Non -Resident Agricultural Land Interests Registration Act (copy to be sent to Merle Gunby, chairman HCFA Absentee/Foreign Ownership Committee and to Gerry Fortune, HCFA President). 5. Letter from Murray Gaunt thanking us for the copy of letter HCFA sent to Dr. Parrott re the South Cayuga liquid waste disposal facility. 6. Letter from G.A. Jewitt, Executive Co-ordinator, Mineral Resources Group re the resolution in regard to requirements of the Pits and Quarries Control Act - information only. ****** Motion by Tony McQuail, seconded by John Nesbit that the bills be paid. Bill Wallace $6.13 meal $8.50 gas + 16.07 gas = $30.70 for his trip to Markham to the Food Co-Alition Conference. Huron Business Machines $74.69, Bartliffs Bakery (donuts) $15.00 Brussels Comm. Merle Gunby introduced the guests, Craig Laing, and George Huron County Federation MEMBERSHIP MEETING HURON CENTENNIAL SCHOOL FEB. 5, 1981 8:30 PM "Farmers Right to farm" GUEST SPEAKER George Klosler Chairman of OFA Environment Committee PG. 40 THE RURAL VOICE/FEBRUARY 1981 Booth from Ministry of Natural Resources who were present to discuss the new Pits and Quarries Act. Craig Laing discussed the new Pits & Quarries Act, by defining a Pit and a Quarry - licenses - and regulation changes in the Act. A very informative Question and Answer period followed. Andy Durand thanked the guests. Merle Gunby presented a resolution from the Absentee Foreign Ownership Comm. seconded by Tony McQuail. "Whereas our government does not appear willing at this time to take any meaningful action to protect the Ontario farming industry from absentee foreign ownership and whereas limited money is available for such programs as tile loans, capital grant programs, etc. and whereas Ontario taxpayers should not be supporting absentee investors. Therefore be it resolved that OFA requests the Ont. govt. to make funding for such programs only available to resident Ontario farm owners." Amend motion to insert "at this time" after "willing" - moved by Walter Elliott, 2nd by Les Caldwell, Carried. A referral motion was made by Doug Fortune, 2nd by Jim McIntosh that the amended motion be referred back to the Huron County Committee - motion Lost. Resolution voted on as amended. Carried. John V. Beers moved H.C. Federation ask the OFA to demand that Farm and Country print the Minutes from the Bd. of Directors mtgs. in Toronto. seconded by Andy Durand. Carried. Fran McQuail asked for more volunteers to attend the Public Speaking Course - Jan. 24, 31 - Feb. 7, - contact Brenda McIntosh or Fran McQuail. 16 registered so far. Tony moved we ask the Fed. of Agriculture to discuss with the Provincial Govt. extending and enhancing the current interest Assistance Program, seconded by Bob Coleman. McKillop hosts sucessful drive The McKillop Federation of Agriculture held a successful township membership drive recently, gaining 33 new members. Now 161 farmers or over 75 per cent of the active township farmers belong to the federation. Those taking part in the drive from the country organization were Gerry Fortune, Bill Fear, John Nesbit and fieldman Bill Crawford. The township directors involved were Ken Scott, Kevin Kale, Mervin Smith. B ob Robinson, Art Bolton, Gordon Blanchard, Francis Hicknell, Leon Maloney, Tom Ryan, Francis Hunt, Bill Murray and Mac Stewart. West Wawanosh increases membership On December 16, nine new members of the Ont. Federation of Agriculture were signed up in West Wawanosh Township. The membership drive was conducted by Jim Errington, Merle Gunby, Cecil Cranston, Tony McQuail, John Bos, and Huron County field man, Bill Crawford. West Wawanosh township president, Cecil Cranston, said he was "pretty well pleased" with the results of the day's efforts. According to his information there were only 42 farmers (not Amish) who weren't O.F.A. members and the day's work brought that number down to 33.
