Young farmers are champs at the Royal
Perth County Junior Farmers and
swine breeders and Huron County swine
breeders and a 4-H Calf Club member all
finished in the money at this year's Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair.
David Knechtel of R.R. 1,
Shakespeare, was declared grand
champion in the Ontario junior barrow
show at the fair. He was followed by Don
Skinner, of R.R. 5, Bowmanville, and
Linda Knetchel of R.R. 1, Shakespeare.
Jane Robinson of R.R. 4, Walton, in
Huron County, placed ninth in the
competition.
Alex Hart of R.R. 1, Gadshill had the
champion and reserve champion single
Duroc barrows and Donald Knechtel of
R.R. 1, Shakespeare had the third-place
entry in the class.
In the judging of gilts, Mr. Van Vliet
won the grand champion in the eight to
10 -month old category. He also had the
grand champion boar six to eight
months of age.
In the junior barrow competition, the
Perth County team of Linda, David and
Nancy Knechtel won the championship.

In the market pig classes, Vernon
Schweitzer of R.R. 2, Granton had the
champion reserve single Yorkshire
barrow in the 175 to 220 -pound category.
Hugh Hart of R.R. 1, Gadshill had the
champion and reserve champion single
Landrace barrow in the same weight
category.
Jan Van Vliet of R.R. 2, Brussels
showed the reserve champion single
Lacombe barrow in the same weight class
at the fair. Vernon Schweitzer won again
with the champion single Hampshire.
Fair about $3.000 richer. The Kippfield
Calf Club member, entered in the
Queen's Quineas competition, showed
the champion Limousin steer.
Lyle's steer, which competed against
72 other steers in its class, weighed 1,225
pounds and was purchased by Dominion
Stores Ltd. for $2.50 per pound
The Perth County Junior Farmers'
team also returned as prize winners from
the fair. The judging competition at the
fair was won by the Perth County team of
Don Green and John Van Winden, both of
Listowel and Doug Peebles of R.R. 2,
Marilyn Milliner of Dundalk stands with the Hereford steer

from R.R. 4, Walton, in the Hampshire
boars class, aged five to seen months,
took third place with the entry.
In the Duroc competition, Vista Villa
Farm, the Robinson farm, showed the
champion Duroc board. Mr. Robinson
and his son Scott also won first place in
the breeders' herd competition,
showing two male and two female
Hampshires, the same animals which
won awards in their individual classes.
Lyle Kinsman, of R.R. 2, Kippen,
returned home from the Royal Winter
Atwood, who tied with a team from
Prince Edward County. The tie was
broken on the points for oral reasons
given by fair judges. The Perth County
team were named winners in the beef
class and the Prince Edward County team
won the dairy judging class.
Doug Peebles placed third for the A.E.
Summer Memorial Trophy for
contestants in intercounty evaluation
competition for the highest total score in
all classes. He compiled /a total of 583
points of a possible 650.
