COMMENT
That's what it's all about
Food. No matter how involved we get with farm politics, the
latest corn infestation, the weather or the price of machinery, we
should remember that all those elements are only important
because of their connection to farmers' essential job...producing
food.
This month Rural Voice has a number of food related
stories...from a serious essay on the use of food as a weapon by
Adrian Vos to some laughs with columnist Giselle Ireland on her
experiences with eating out.
We also look at the grading of Ontario produce -do consumers
understand the labelling? And at exotic meats that are becoming
increasingly popular in Canada --rabbit, goat and even horse -
meat. We've got a story on food buying habits in rural and urban
Bruce County and a guest column from well-known consumer
spokesman Ruth Jackson. Mrs. Jackson discusses quota value
and marketing boards from a CAC point of view.
A special story that we're especially proud of this month pays
tribute to the post-war generation of immigrants who've played
such a big part in the prosperity of this rural area. Be sure to
read They Chose Canada by Yvonne Reynolds which starts on
page 8.
A European influence spills over onto the Rural Voice's family
pages, where we've got some interesting Dutch recipes for you
to try.
A photo feature by Klaus Seeger captures some of the '
excitement of a popular Huron County event that brings
spectators from much farther afield...Blyth's Threshermen's
Reunion.
And as usual, there's much more in Rural Voice: regular
columnists and helpful news and advice for Western Ontario
farmers.
We apologize for the fact that one promised feature on veteran
organic farmers isn't in this issue. W Cre still working on it and
hope to have the story for our readers soon.
Next month is R ural Voice's energy issue when we'll look at
various types of energy efficient barns, a local farmer who's
using wind power and Tots more.
