COMMENT A salute to farm families As we head into the fall, and a busy round of meetings and community activities for many farmers, the September issue of Rural Voice looks into the question "what do farmers do besides farm9" In the case of a couple of Huron County farm families, off-tarm activities from 4 -[-Ito church work and sports to politics keep riost family members on the run every day of the week. When you read Herb Shoveller's interviews with the Ginns and the McNeils, you'll likely wonder, like we did, how they can possibly pack all they do into a seven day week. Other farmers have very specialized recreational pasttimes, as you'll see in Donna Thiel's story about the Perth Flying Farmers. And then, both male and female farm family members will get a good laugh and just might see themselves in Giselle Ireland's saga of the battle of the bulge. "Big is beautiful" her column this month is titled. If you've welcomed a newly graduated veterinarian to your farm lately or have just wondered what life's like for a vet in a country practise, you'll enjoy Bev Brown's interviews with four recent U of G grads. Along the same line is Adrian Vos' look at a number of Centralia College of Agricultural Technology students, five years after they graduated. We also sent reporters to talk to the three members of parliament in Rural Voice's coverage area and ask "your" men in Ottawa what they are doing for farmers. Next month's Rural Voice is a food and politics issue, featuring stories on consumers, on buy Canadian programs and on a group of farmers who've been successfully operating without chemicals for years. Enjoy our family farm issue and we'll see you in October. the rural Voice Published monthly by McLean Bros., Publishers Ltd., Box 10, Blyth, Ontario. NOM 1H0. Telephone 523-9646 or 527-0240.
