WOMEN'S
INSTITUTES
What they really do
BY GISELE IRELAND
The year 1980 has been designated
"Women's Institute Year". Since there are
areas where people are not aware exactly
what the Women's Institutes actually do,
the Teeswater branch had an Open House
and displayed many interesting facets of
their organization.
The displays were a mini education
course in the many projects the W.I. is
involved with. They ranged from needle-
work and baking to man relating to his
environment in these chemical and hydro-
power -lined areas. The 4H work was also
displayed and the WI showed how it
coordinates with the Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food. Piano music entertained
during the showing.
The WI included a tremendous display
on "Think Safety," and they used posters
made by students and material from the
Farm Safety Association. Also on display
were the Tweedsmuir History books which
always create interest. The WI also had a
fine display of school books of days past
and a display from the International Year
of the Child.
Bruce County Tartan jewellery was also
displayed and is sold in this county by a
W.I. representative. There are some truly
distinctive and lovely pieces in this
collection, all bearing the Bruce County
Tartan.
The Teeswater Women's Institute did a
tremendous job in bringing their com-
munity awareness to the public and
showing how their motto, "For Home and
County" really means just that.
